Grooming in Winter: What to Cut, What to Keep

Should you shave your dog in the winter? Trim your cat’s fur? Skip baths until spring?

Here’s how to adjust grooming routines for colder weather:

Don’t Shave Double-Coated Breeds

Breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs have natural insulation. Shaving can disrupt their ability to regulate temperature and even damage the coat long term.

Trim, Don’t Chop

Long-haired dogs and cats can benefit from a tidy-up around the paws, belly, and sanitary areas — just avoid removing their insulating layers.

Keep Brushing

Winter coats still shed! Regular brushing keeps fur healthy, removes debris, and distributes skin oils.

Bathing: Less Often, But Still Important

Too many baths can dry out winter skin. Bathe only when dirty or smelly, and use a moisturizing, pet-safe shampoo. Dry thoroughly to prevent chills.

Hydrate the Skin

Consider adding omega-3s or using a moisturizing spray if your pet’s skin gets flaky.

Winter grooming is all about balance. Stay clean, stay brushed — but don’t overdo it. Their coat is their coat for a reason.
